How soon hospitals in Taiwan say they can see you

These are each hospital's own words, not our estimate. “Booking” is how soon it says you can be seen, “Department wait” is a wait it publishes for one department, and “Reply” is how fast it answers an enquiry. Few hospitals publish waiting times by department; where none is published, ask the international office for a date in writing before you book flights.

Official figures and rules for patients from abroad

  • TTFMT: launched 2007, administered by the Taiwan Nongovernmental Hospitals and Clinics Association and supervised by the Ministry of Health and Welfare; an alliance of 113 qualified hospitals and clinics. figures
  • TTFMT statistics: 'reproductive medicine ranks fifth among the medical specialties for international patients seeking medical treatment in 2023' (rank only, no counts). figures
  • TTFMT says all 87 teaching hospitals and most local hospitals seek the top accreditation level, issued by the Joint Commission of Taiwan (JCT), which links to National Health Insurance subsidies; it cites a 2014 MOHW report of 43 PET-CT, 200 MRI and 357 CT scanners in Taiwan (2014 figures). figures
  • TTFMT page on joint replacement: 'about 20,000 patients receive knee replacement' each year in Taiwan through minimally invasive surgery (all patients, not foreign patients). figures
  • Chang Gung's own visa page: a visitor visa (7 to 30 days) is usually enough; for stays over 1 month the hospital helps apply for a medical visa; some nationalities need a hospital-signed medical visa letter; visa assistance fees are published (e.g. 5,000 NTD per general IMC case). rule
  • Foreign patients without National Health Insurance pay self-pay rates: KFSYSCC charges items other than its listed consultation fees at 1.7 times its domestic self-pay schedule; FEMH and Chang Gung publish registration and consultation fees only (hospital's own pages). rule

Planning a medical trip to Taiwan

  • Ask each clinic for a written, itemised quote and the appointment in writing before booking flights.
  • Check that your travel insurance covers planned medical treatment; many policies exclude it.
  • Ask for reports in English and images in a format your doctor at home can open. See how to bring your results home.
  • Know who to contact if you have a problem after you fly home, and tell your own doctor before you go.

Treatment in Taiwan: questions

What treatments have published prices in Taiwan?

We found prices we could check for health check-ups, heart check-ups and cancer screening packages. We have no verified price for MRI scans, CT scans, colonoscopies, gastroscopies, cataract operations, laser eye operations, dental implants, full-arch implant treatments, veneers, hair transplants, hip replacements, knee replacements and IVF cycles yet.

Which hospitals in Taiwan take international patients?

We list 5 in Taipei and Kaohsiung: Chang Gung Memorial Hospital, Linkou, Kaohsiung Chang Gung Memorial Hospital, Koo Foundation Sun Yat-Sen Cancer Center, Far Eastern Memorial Hospital and Cathay Healthcare Management, Dunnan Center. Each runs its own service for patients from abroad. Chang Gung Memorial Hospital, Linkou name JCI accreditation.

How long do you wait for treatment in Taiwan?

Hospitals publish their own booking times, for example Kaohsiung Chang Gung Memorial Hospital (health screening booking): “To ensure the quality of your service, please make an appointment 3 months in advance.”. Ask for a date in writing before booking flights.

Is it safe to have treatment in Taiwan?

We cannot judge the safety of a clinic, and listing a price is not a recommendation. Ask the clinic about the doctor's qualifications, how complications are handled, and who looks after you when you are home, and talk to your own doctor first.

Do I need a visa for medical treatment in Taiwan?

It depends on your passport and how long you stay. Use the official pages linked on this page: the FCDO for UK citizens, travel.gc.ca for Canadians, the State Department for US citizens and the Department of Foreign Affairs for Irish citizens.

Can I claim the cost back from the NHS or HSE?

No public scheme in the UK or Ireland covers planned treatment in Taiwan.

What language do clinics in Taiwan use?

Mandarin; international medical centres arrange English-speaking staff.
