How soon hospitals in Malaysia say they can see you

These are each hospital's own words, not our estimate. “Booking” is how soon it says you can be seen, “Department wait” is a wait it publishes for one department, and “Reply” is how fast it answers an enquiry. Few hospitals publish waiting times by department; where none is published, ask the international office for a date in writing before you book flights.

Official figures and rules for patients from abroad

  • Malaysia Healthcare Travel Council (MHTC): 1.6 million healthcare travellers in 2024, up 14% on the year (MHTC industry overview). figures
  • MHTC states it works with more than 80 partner hospitals and clinics and healthcare travellers from about 120 countries (MHTC about page). figures
  • MHTC states its member hospitals hold JCI, MSQH or ACHS accreditation (MHTC wording; not verified per hospital here). figures
  • MHTC: hospitals must request Meet & Greet at least three working days before arrival or departure. rule
  • Gleneagles Kuala Lumpur FAQ: short medical visits use a social visit pass; the hospital quotes a deposit guide of about RM5,000-10,000 for a medical admission and about RM15,000-30,000 for a surgical admission. Payment in MYR only. rule
  • MHTC: a medical e-visa application is described in four steps with 3-5 working days processing; visa-free healthcare stays of up to 90 days apply to listed countries, and the list readable in text showed ASEAN, East Asia and South Asia countries and did not show the UK, US, Canada or Ireland. Check the MHTC visa page and the Malaysian immigration site for your passport. rule

NHS and HSE schemes do not reach Malaysia. The NHS S2 route covers state treatment in the EU, Switzerland, Norway, Iceland and Liechtenstein, and the HSE schemes cover the EU, EEA, the UK and Switzerland. Treatment in Malaysia is paid by you or by a private insurer who agrees in advance. NHS S2 route, HSE Treatment Abroad Scheme.

Planning a medical trip to Malaysia

  • Ask each clinic for a written, itemised quote and the appointment in writing before booking flights.
  • Check that your travel insurance covers planned medical treatment; many policies exclude it.
  • Ask for reports in English and images in a format your doctor at home can open. See how to bring your results home.
  • Know who to contact if you have a problem after you fly home, and tell your own doctor before you go.

Treatment in Malaysia: questions

What treatments have published prices in Malaysia?

We found prices we could check for colonoscopies, gastroscopies, health check-ups, heart check-ups, cancer screening packages, cataract operations, laser eye operations, knee replacements and IVF cycles. We have no verified price for MRI scans, CT scans, dental implants, full-arch implant treatments, veneers, hair transplants and hip replacements yet.

Which hospitals in Malaysia take international patients?

We list 5 in Kuala Lumpur, Penang and Melaka: Gleneagles Hospital Kuala Lumpur, Gleneagles Hospital Penang, Prince Court Medical Centre, Island Hospital and Mahkota Medical Centre. Each runs its own service for patients from abroad. Gleneagles Hospital Kuala Lumpur, Gleneagles Hospital Penang and Mahkota Medical Centre name JCI accreditation.

How long do you wait for treatment in Malaysia?

Hospitals publish their own booking times, for example Island Hospital (health screening package appointment): “Appointments must be made at least three (3) working days in advance and are subject to availability.”; Gleneagles Hospital Penang (booking a specialist appointment): “Please email or WhatsApp us at least 1 week in advance.”; Prince Court Medical Centre (planning a trip for treatment (recommendation, not a guaranteed slot)): “Start planning at least three months ahead, considering travel bookings and treatment scheduling.”. Ask for a date in writing before booking flights.

Is it safe to have treatment in Malaysia?

We cannot judge the safety of a clinic, and listing a price is not a recommendation. Ask the clinic about the doctor's qualifications, how complications are handled, and who looks after you when you are home, and talk to your own doctor first.

Do I need a visa for medical treatment in Malaysia?

It depends on your passport and how long you stay. Use the official pages linked on this page: the FCDO for UK citizens, travel.gc.ca for Canadians, the State Department for US citizens and the Department of Foreign Affairs for Irish citizens.

Can I claim the cost back from the NHS or HSE?

No public scheme in the UK or Ireland covers planned treatment in Malaysia.

What language do clinics in Malaysia use?

Malay; English is widely used in private hospitals.
