What a gastroscopy is
A gastroscopy is a camera test of the food pipe, the stomach and the first part of the small intestine. It takes 5 to 15 minutes with a throat spray or sedation. Small tissue samples (biopsies) can be taken, for example to test for Helicobacter pylori, and sent to a lab.

- Check whether sedation is in the price.
- Ask how biopsies and the Helicobacter test are charged and when the results come.
- Some clinics sell a gastroscopy and a colonoscopy in one session; compare the combined price with each on its own.
Do not travel for a gastroscopy if
- Vomiting blood, black stools, difficulty swallowing or weight loss you cannot explain: these need an urgent pathway at home.
- Travelling alone after sedation. Clinics usually require someone to collect you.
Before you book
- Ask your doctor whether to stop acid-reducing tablets or blood thinners beforehand.
- Book the test before the flights and get the time in writing.
After you come home
- Bring the report, the photos and any lab results to your doctor.

Before flights, the lowest published prices we found are in Poland (about £159 to £218), Hungary (about £178 to £295) and Malaysia (about £238 to £641). The cheapest country is not always the cheapest trip: a short flight can matter more than the price difference.
