How it works for a visitor

  1. Ask for a written quoteSend the clinic your referral or reason for the veneer and ask for an itemised price, the date, and what happens if the result needs follow-up.
  2. Before you goSend recent X-rays and photos, and get a written plan with the number of teeth, the material and the total price.
  3. Before you goRead the official travel advice for the country. The UK Foreign Office says dental procedures are among the most common treatments for medical tourists in Turkey.
  4. LanguageSpanish; the private hospitals that take US patients work in English.
  5. Entry rulesCheck the official advice for your passport before booking: UK citizens (FCDO entry requirements), Canadian citizens (travel.gc.ca), US citizens (State Department, choose the country), Irish citizens (DFA travel advice, choose the country).
  6. After you returnRegister with a dentist at home and give them the records and materials used. A chipped or loose veneer needs a dentist, at home prices.

Can your public system pay for it?

NHS and HSE schemes do not reach Costa Rica. The NHS S2 route covers state treatment in the EU, Switzerland, Norway, Iceland and Liechtenstein, and the HSE schemes cover the EU, EEA, the UK and Switzerland. Treatment in Costa Rica is paid by you or by a private insurer who agrees in advance. NHS S2 route, HSE Treatment Abroad Scheme.

When not to travel for a veneer

  • Gum disease or tooth decay that has not been treated yet.
  • Heavy teeth grinding, until a dentist has assessed your bite.
  • Healthy teeth you would only like whiter: ask a dentist about whitening first, because filing teeth down is permanent.

How to compare veneer quotes

A veneer is a thin shell of porcelain bonded to the front of a tooth to change its colour or shape. The tooth is usually filed down first, which cannot be undone. Composite veneers are built up in resin, cost less and wear faster. Prices are per tooth, so a smile makeover of 8 to 20 teeth multiplies the figure.

  • Check the treatment plan says veneers, not crowns. A crown covers the whole tooth and needs much more of it removed.
  • Compare the same material: porcelain or e.max against porcelain or e.max, not against composite.
  • Ask whether the consultation, X-rays and smile design are in the price, and how much is paid up front.
  • Ask what the guarantee covers and whether you must travel back to use it.

Veneers in Costa Rica: questions

How much does a veneer cost in Costa Rica?

The published prices we found range from $500 to $550, about £374 to £411 or $500 to $550. They come from Aesthetic Dental Care Costa Rica (inside Hospital Internacional CIMA, Escazu) and Costa Rica Dental (Centro Medico Sirius, San Juan). Each covers something slightly different, so read what is included before comparing.

Is a veneer in Costa Rica cheaper than paying privately in the UK?

Before travel, the prices here work out at about £374 to £411, against about £850 at the UK providers we checked. Travel adds a flight and a hotel on top; the calculator on the home page adds a rough estimate.

Will the NHS or HSE pay for a veneer in Costa Rica?

No. The NHS S2 route and the HSE schemes cover planned treatment in Europe only. Costa Rica is outside them, so you pay yourself or through a private insurer that agrees in advance.

How many days should I plan in Costa Rica?

About a week at many clinics: preparing the teeth and fitting temporaries, a few days while the lab makes the veneers, then fitting and a bite check. Ask for the clinic’s schedule. That is our planning estimate, not medical advice: the clinic sets the schedule, and you should ask it for one in writing.

What should I check before booking a veneer in Costa Rica?

Check the treatment plan says veneers, not crowns. A crown covers the whole tooth and needs much more of it removed. Compare the same material: porcelain or e.max against porcelain or e.max, not against composite.
