Coronary stent abroad or at home: waits and published prices compared
We read what hospitals and clinics in 20 countries publish for a coronary angioplasty with a stent and set it against the official wait and the self-pay price in the UK, Canada, Ireland and the US. Price unit: one angioplasty with stenting of a coronary artery (PCI), usually with the angiogram; the number of stents and nights differ, so each row says what it includes.

Key findings
- 3 of 20 countries publish a comparable price (2 more only inside bundles). The lowest is Lithuania at £1,590; the highest published figure is £7,140, before travel.
- From the UK, 3 of 3 countries are cheaper than a private coronary angioplasty with a stent at home before travel, and 3 once a rough travel estimate is added. The lowest UK self-pay price we found is £12,450.
- Official waits: England, 67.9% within 18 weeks (all cardiology) (August 2026) and Ireland (public hospitals), about 35% waiting over 6 months (all cardiology procedures) (24 September 2026).
- No verified comparable price in Mexico, Turkey, Hungary, Czechia, Spain, Portugal, Greece, Costa Rica, Colombia, South Korea, Japan, Taiwan, India, United Arab Emirates and China. A gap means we could not find a price the provider publishes itself, not that the treatment is unavailable.

What a coronary angioplasty with a stent is
Coronary angioplasty (PCI) opens a narrowed heart artery from the inside: a thin tube goes in through the wrist or groin, a balloon widens the artery and a small metal mesh tube (a stent) keeps it open. It is usually done under local anaesthetic, often straight after an angiogram that shows where the narrowing is.

No country we cover publishes a waiting time for stents alone. England and Ireland count everyone waiting for cardiology, which includes many other tests and treatments: in England 67.9% of the 360,799 people waiting were within 18 weeks in August 2026 (NHS England), and in Ireland 2,103 of 6,070 adults on the cardiology procedure list had waited over 6 months (NTPF). At Scotland's national heart centre, people admitted for a cardiology procedure in August 2026 had waited a median of 42 days (Public Health Scotland). A stent after a heart attack is emergency care and is not on these lists.
None of the hospitals abroad that we list publishes how soon it can fit a stent for a patient from abroad. Ask for a date in writing, and ask what happens if the angiogram shows you need bypass surgery instead.

Choose where you live and the calculator lines up your wait, your price at home and each country's price plus travel for a coronary angioplasty with a stent.
How to compare coronary angioplasty with a stent prices
- Check how many stents the price includes and what type (most are drug-eluting); each extra stent usually adds to the bill.
- Ask whether the angiogram, the hospital nights and the medicines you take home are in the price.
- Ask what happens if the angiogram shows you need bypass surgery instead.
Do not travel for a coronary angioplasty with a stent if
- Chest pain at rest, pain that is getting worse, or a heart attack: that is an emergency at home.
- Anyone who cannot take blood-thinning medicines for the months after a stent.
Before you book
- Send your latest ECG, echocardiogram, any stress test or CT angiogram, and your medicine list; ask a cardiologist there to confirm in writing that a stent is the likely plan.
- Get a written quote that says how many stents are included and the price of each extra one.
- Check your travel insurance covers a planned procedure abroad.
After you come home
- Keep taking the blood-thinning medicines exactly as prescribed; stopping them early can block the stent.
- Bring the procedure report and the stent details (type and size) to your doctor at home.
Bringing results home so your own doctor can use them is covered in how to bring your results home.
